Why is it convenient to eat whole grains?

Image
Grains such as wheat, barley and oats can be added to soups or baked goods to increase their nutritional value. In the era of carbohydrate-reduced diets, the benefits that grains bring to health are sometimes forgotten. Since prehistoric times, grain-based products have been the main food of agricultural societies. Almost all cultures have a basic cereal around which their diet is centered. Currently, thanks to modern agricultural techniques and efficient transport, we can try a huge variety of grains. Despite having access to cereals from all over the world, we continue to depend mainly on wheat, which is ground to make flour and with it bread. To a lesser extent, we also eat corn, rice, oats, barley, millet and some exotic grains.  Whole grains are rich in complex carbohydrates, fiber and many vitamins and minerals.  They also have a low fat content, and when eaten together with beans or other legumes, they are a rich source of protein. Nutritionists urge the population...

Interesting facts about longevity

Image
Longevity has at least two components: genetic and environmental factors (life habits, diet, stress). You can interfere with the latter. A few years ago, gerontologists revealed that the residents of the island of Okinawa, in southern Japan, lived longer than the inhabitants of any other country. Your secret diet?  Variety of cereals, vegetables, soy and fish ; little meat and poultry, and less dairy. Currently, life expectancy in Okinawa is decreasing because young people on the island have an abound diet. Longevity in fast foods, which cause high levels of obesity. Several studies on Mormons, Adventists and Trapan monks - who have a vegetarian diet and follow a quiet lifestyle - show that their life expectancy is also higher. A Spanish study conducted in people between 65 and 80 years old showed that those who  followed a Mediterranean diet  were 31 percent less likely to die in the next nine years than those who did not. This type of food includes whol...

Autism in adults: the invisible disease

Image
Sometimes the problem is not diagnosed until adulthood, and the news can be both shock and relief. After a particularly stressful day of work three years ago, Jo Bervoets, 51, a Belgian engineer, was on his way home when he thought the train station was noisier and more chaotic than usual. "I was already a little lost, immersed in my thoughts, before arriving at the station," says Bervoets. He was starting a new job, and he was worried about not being able to connect with his new colleagues. "I got on any train in the direction of Antwerp." When the train arrived at its station, Bervoets went to the stop to rent bicycles where he used to take one to get to his neighborhood, but there was none.  Agged, he realized that he did not know how to return to his house . "I called my wife and, somehow, I managed to get there," says Bervoets. After three months in his new position, he was exhausted. "I came down." He says he still doesn't remember ex...

Living better: 10 changes in habits in the living room

Image
If you change some bad habits that this environment encourages, you will be able to increase the fun and improve your health. Probably this is the one of all the places in the house where we spend our time, the one where we are the most. Here you will usually find the computer, the TV and the armchairs in which we usually get to read a book. Few modern inventions have harmed both health and television. We barely move when we are glued to the screen, and in each advertising cut we are tempted by images of greasy and sugary foods. Therefore, the next time you settle in the living room armchair and press the “power” button on the remote control, keep these tips in mind. 1. Make a list of tasks during advertising cuts Ten minutes before your favorite program starts, make a list of five tasks - no more than two minutes each - that you can carry out during the advertisements. The list may include occupations such as accommodating the magazine rack, watering the plants, lifting the plate...

Next British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s opinion of Middle East

Image
Rishi Sunak is set to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom after a rival candidate dropped out of the race, the BBC reported today. The former minister and member of the Conservative party will be the first British prime minister of Asian descent and is expected take office within days. The soon-to-be prime minister has expressed some notable views on the Middle East. Like others in the Conservative party, Sunak is a strong supporter of UK-Israel ties. He told the Conservative Friends of Israel parliamentary group earlier this year he views Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, according to The Jewish Chronicle in London. He also denounced the characterization of Israel as an apartheid state in an interview with the outlet. Sunak also backs the UK’s ties with the Gulf states, especially the United Arab Emirates. Former British Defense Secretary Liam Fox told Abu Dhabi’s The National in an interview today that Sunak views the Abraham Accords between the UAE, Israel, Bahrai...

Austria wants to secure more gas from UAE

Image
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer will seek to secure more natural gas supplies from the United Arab Emirates during a visit to Abu Dhabi this week aimed at reducing his country’s heavy energy dependence on Russia, his office said on Monday. Austria has been scrambling since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to find alternative sources of natural gas, vital for heating and some energy-intensive industries producing goods such as steel and paper. Most of Austria’s electricity comes from renewables, especially hydropower. Austria and Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala are the two biggest shareholders in Austrian oil and gas company OMV. The UAE is an “important strategic partner” in Austria’s efforts to ensure security of supply, Nehammer added.

Why leaders are looking for ‘emotional intelligence’

Image
Workers are trained to trumpet technical skills and personal achievements on their resumés, and talk them up in job interviews. However, to succeed at work, either personally or as part of a team, an entirely different skill set is coming to the fore. Leaders are increasingly looking for ‘emotional intelligence’, also known as ‘EQ’. This range of competencies encompasses our ability to understand and manage our own and others’ feelings, then use this knowledge to build positive, productive connections. In general, working in an emotionally intelligent way may mean taking a different approach — instead of putting your head down and prioritising to-do lists or productivity goals, it means putting human relationships and our own and others’ feelings first. It may be a challenging mindset transition, yet the benefits can be profound, increasing morale, productivity, wellbeing and personal influence — all traits employers are demanding now, more than ever.

How to give and receive compliments at work

Image
Whether you are a manager or an individual contributor, giving and receiving compliments plays a critical role in building and maintaining relationships at work. When done well, a compliment is one of the most powerful ways to let someone know that we value and appreciate them. Yet, these seemingly positive interactions can be surprisingly tricky to navigate for both giver and receiver alike. Some of my earliest research, published as “What to Do When Praise Makes You Uncomfortable,” revealed that although the number one thing people associate with being recognized is feeling valued (88%), nearly 70% of people associated embarrassment or discomfort with the process of both giving and receiving. Although compliments should be a positive experience — and most of the time they are — in my research, I have found the process of giving and receiving compliments often brings up a lot of anxiety for everyone involved. Givers express worries of being seen as a kiss-up, having their complim...

Image
The “Explorer Rashid” team has completed the final stage of the tests, the last step separating the explorer from the launch date for the completion of the Emirates Moon Exploration Project, the first Emirati mission to the surface of the moon. The UAE’s rover is named after the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, former Ruler of Dubai. A successful mission would make the UAE the fourth country globally to land on the moon. The rover would land in an unexplored area called ‘Mare Frigoris’ on the moon. Also known as the ‘Sea of Cold’, Mare Frigoris lies in the far lunar north, according to Nasa. A ‘mare’ is a flat, dark plain on the lunar surface. The mission will see the rover collect images and information that allows the UAE to study how to build a human settlement on the moon, prepare for future missions to study Mars, and provide the scientific community with answers about the solar system.

What you see is what you think, change it

Image
“Think Different,” said the famous 1997 Apple advertisement. Excellent advice, obviously, to all creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs. But, along with thinking differently in order to come up with revolutionary new ideas or products, there is also seeing differently. Great creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs look at the world in ways that are different from how many of us look at things. This is why they see opportunities that other people miss. The story of Velcro is well known. A Swiss engineer, George de Mestral, decided to look more closely at the burrs (seeds from plants) he found clinging to his clothing after a walk in the woods. He took out his microscope and saw that nature had designed hooks on the burrs, which had then attached themselves to looped fibers in his clothing. The famous hook-and-loop alternative to the zipper, under the name Velcro, was born. (Today, there is a whole field, called biomimetics, devoted to imitating nature in order to solve human prob...

Bicultural helps you be a leader

Image
Cultivating a global mindset is essential for today’s emerging business leaders. As the world becomes more connected and remote work becomes the new standard, there are an increasing number of cultural nuances that leaders must be able to navigate. Whether you eventually lead teams across multiple countries, or in a single location, you will need to learn how to effectively connect with employees from diverse backgrounds with varying cultural identities. Leaders with a global mindset do more than uphold equity and inclusion – they possess a fundamental understanding of how cultural identity influences the communication styles, values, and needs of communities around the world. As a result, they approach every workplace interaction through a culturally sensitive lens and question the global impact of their decisions. Here are six lessons I learned during my life that have helped me develop a successful global leadership mindset. 1) Consider cultural context. When leading global te...
