Preserving Africa’s Rich Heritage: UAE Launches Fund for Conservation and Protection

In a significant move to protect and preserve the cultural and natural heritage of Africa, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the launch of a new fund. Developed in collaboration with the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (Aliph) and the African World Heritage Fund, this initiative aims to support the conservation and documentation of world heritage sites across the African continent. With a focus on addressing the underrepresentation of African sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the UAE is poised to become a platinum partner of the African World Heritage Fund, working diligently to ensure the recognition and preservation of Africa’s outstanding universal value.


Safeguarding African Treasures: Through this collaboration, the UAE is committed to going beyond mere restoration and revitalization efforts. The fund will provide support for critical conservation projects in Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Notable sites to benefit from this initiative include Sudan’s Dongola Mosque, a historic treasure listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List. Additionally, the Yemrehana Krestos Church in Ethiopia, dating back to the 11th to 12th centuries, and the National Cultural Heritage Inventory of the DRC will receive assistance in their restoration and documentation efforts. By investing in these projects, the UAE aims to offer local employment opportunities and training for experts, contributing to the sustainable development of the African nations involved.

A Platinum Partnership: The UAE’s commitment to the African World Heritage Fund as a platinum partner underscores its dedication to intercultural dialogue, diversity, and peace. By actively working to address the underrepresentation of African sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the UAE recognizes the cultural significance and historical role that Africa plays in our global heritage. This partnership not only aims to preserve tangible heritage but also emphasizes the importance of intangible cultural heritage, promoting diversity, tolerance, and coexistence among societies.

The fund’s launch coincides with the UAE’s commitment to the Year of Sustainability in 2023, highlighting the urgent need to address climate-related challenges faced by African heritage sites. By integrating climate resilience strategies into conservation efforts, the UAE is taking a holistic approach to protect Africa’s invaluable treasures for future generations.

UAE provided humanitarian aid to the victims of the earthquake

 Last week I posted about how  UAE by order of His Highness Mohammed Bin Zayed has ordered an aid package totaling $100 million to help those affected by the earthquake in Syria and Turkey, they were in fact, one of the firsts countries to help them during this crisis. And months ago I also shared with you the multiple humanitarian help that UAE sent to Ukraine, Mauritania, etc. Truth is, UAE is always able and ready to support how need it, no matter what.
